Protecting the People of London

London Probation is a law enforcement agency.

We work with offenders to protect the public and reduce re-offending in London. We deliver a range of services designed to tackle offender behaviour, such as regular supervision meetings, offender programmes and management of Unpaid Work as punishment for offenders in the community. We also help train offenders in new skills and help them find work.

Our work with offenders at every stage of a sentence, starts with writing reports for Judges and Magistrates to help inform sentencing decisions.

When an offender is sentenced to a Community Order, we help them complete the requirements of the order – and inform the courts if they don't.

Finally, we work with offenders released from prison on licence, ensuring licensing conditions are met and their resettlement in the community.

Our five key aims are:

  • Protection of the public
  • Reduction of re-offending
  • Proper punishment of offenders
  • Rehabilitation of offenders
  • Proper care of victims

About NPS

The National Probation Service (NPS) and the Prison Service form part of the National Offender Management Service (NOMS), managed by the Home Office. NOMS has been created to cut further the re-offending rates and increase rehabilitation.

The NPS also works in partnership with other criminal justice agencies and with local authorities, health, education, housing and a wide range of independent and voluntary organisations.

Each year the NPS begins the supervision of more than 170,000 offenders, most of whom are young men under the age of 30.
